10 Ways to Protect Your Home from the Winter Weather in Minnesota

10 Ways to Protect Your Home from the Winter Weather in Minnesota

December 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

winterizing home in cold climate

The adage, “prevention is better than cure” is still applicable to date. The best time to prepare and protect your home from Minnesota’s tough winters is during fall. Take the time to identify the risk your home faces, and the measures you can take to keep it safe. Since Minnesota’s winters tend to be frigid, preparation and winterizing your house is key to going through the winter in safety and comfort. It is also a good way to avoid incurring huge repair bills in spring. As you prepare for winters, here are a few things you need to consider:

  1. Clean Your Gutters
If your gutters are blocked, they can damage your foundation, roof, and landscaping. As you prepare for winter, you should at least clean your gutters in spring and fall. Apart from the occasional cleaning, you should also clean them after a major storm that tends to send leaves flying. The right approach is to clean from a ladder instead of the roof. If you can, get a spotter or hire a professional to do the cleaning for you.
  1. Seal Windows and Doors
Your heating bill would increase because cold air is leaking easily through cracks around your windows and doors. Weatherstripping your doors and caulking your windows can help to keep the house warm. If the last time you did it was last time, then this is the time to go back and check whether everything is in place. Take time to inspect your weather-stripping and make sure there are no leaks. Get a window insulation kit and properly apply the wrap to the inside of the window for that extra layer of protection.
  1. Trim Your Trees
Your trees can cause a lot of damage to your home if the branches fall on your roof. Apart from winds, winter snow and ice are common culprits for making tree branches to fall. Trimming the branches that overhang your house in time can play an important role in protecting your roof. You can also hire a tree surgeon to do the work for you and ensure everything is in place.
  1. Seal Your Deck
To keep your home safe, you need to apply a good sealant every few years or choose from a range of available permanent sealants. While opaque stains tend to last longer, clear treatments last for shorter periods and need to reapply every year. Any unsealed deck will attract mildew that will likely rot. Take time to seal your deck in fall without having for spring like everyone else. This is also a good time to check the deck for any damages that may have occurred during summer.
  1. Check and Change Your Furnace Filters
As you prepare for winter, check the instructions from your manufacturer regarding the filters. Some furnaces may need filter replacement only in the fall while others require checking through the winter. Take this time to ruin the furnace to make sure it still works before it starts getting cold.
  1. Clean Your Chimney
You should clean your chimney early enough before winter. It is custom practice for individuals with a wood fireplace to clean the chimney to reduce the risk of fire. Doing so at the right time not only makes sure you are safe but also ensures you got a way of keeping warm in the cold season.
  1. Insulate Your Pipes
For those with pipes in the basement, this is the time to cover them with foam insulation. Wrap the pipes outside with heat tape to reduce the risk of frozen pipes. This will also help in reducing any problems and damages that can be caused by frozen pipes in your home.
  1. Put Away Lawn or Patio Furniture
Before winter arises put away or cover your lawn and patio furniture, grill, or other items that you had kept outside during summer. Ensure the outdoors is clean, all kid’s toys have been gathered and put into the garage or indoors.
  1. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
The rule of thumb is to run your ceiling fans counterclockwise during summer and clockwise during winter. This will ensure that warm air is moving in the right direction for the season. The good thing is that most ceiling fans are reversible but just pressing a button.
  1. Winterize Your Garden

Winterize your sprinkler system and unhook the hoses before the first frost. Make sure you have emptied the rain barrel and turn it over before a hard freeze. Failure to do so may cause it to crack or even explode in the worst-case scenario. Empty the gas tank of your lawnmower or use a gas stabilizer to ensure it is safe.

Bottom Line

Preparing for winter is quite straightforward and simple if you know what to do. These simple steps will help you reduce your heating bill during the season and avoid expensive repairs to your home after winter.

Energy-Saving Tips for Fall and Winter

Energy-Saving Tips for Fall and Winter

November 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

Winterize Your Home-2

As you plan to keep warm during the cool fall and cold winter months, you can save on energy costs by taking simple measures for your home. Try to keep the house warm while locking the cold outside. The tips shared in this article can be used daily as they are simple and affordable actions you can take to keep your home warm.

The first thing you need to do is conduct an energy audit of your home if you haven’t yet. An energy audit helps you identify areas you can save the most. It will also help you determine whether you need to make bigger investments for long-term energy saving. Based on your audit and the nature of your home, you can save energy and electricity costs this fall and winter by implementing the following tips:

  1. Utilize Heat From the Sun
The heat from the sun is free for use and allows you to save energy if you use it in the right way. During the day, open curtains on the windows facing south to allow sunlight to heat up your home in a natural way. Make sure you close them early in the evening and night when it is chilly to reduce the amount of cold entering the house.
  2. Cover Drafty Windows
You could be losing a lot of heat through drafty windows. During the cold winter months, use clear and heavy-duty plastic sheets to cover openings in your window frames. You can also tape plastic film and seal the openings tightly to reduce infiltration. Consider installing tight-fitting and insulating shades or drapes on the windows, which feel drafty after weatherizing.
  3. Find and Seal Leaks
Any leaks in your home are a source of energy loss. Take time to find and seal air leaks in your house, especially around utility cut-through for pipes, gains in recessed lights in the insulated ceiling, gaps around chimneys, and unfinished spaced behind closets and cupboards. You may add weather-stripping and caulk to seal air leaks if your windows and doors are leaky.
  4. Adjust the House Temperature
The temperature in your home should be ideal for the time of the day and activities you are engaged in. If you are home and awake, try setting your thermostat as low as you can. At night when you are asleep or when you are out of the house, setting your thermostat to around 10 – 15 degrees can save you more than 10% on your heating and cooling bills. Nowadays, you can even install a programmable or smart thermostat that allows you to automatically set the temperature depending on the time of day.
  5. Reduce Heat Loss from the Fireplace
You can take a few measures to reduce heat loss from your fireplace. When you use the fireplace, open the damper in the bottom in the bottom of the firebox. You can also open the nearest windows about 1 inch and the door leading to the room. Then lower the thermostat setting to about 50 or 550 F. When there is no fire burning, always keep the fireplace damper closed. For those who never use the fireplace, it is advisable to plug and seal the chimney flue. However, if you use the fireplace regularly, install a heat-air exchange system and tempered glass doors to ensure warm air is blown back into the room. You may also acquire C-shaped metal grates to draw cool air from the room into the fireplace while circulating warm air into the room. Other measures you may take include adding caulking around the hearth of the fireplace and ensuring the fireplace flue damper is snugly sealed.
  6. Maintain Your Heating System
You could be using lots of energy and incurring extra costs if your heating system is inefficient. Schedule for servicing on a regular basis to ensure everything is working effectively. Replace your furnace and haring pump filters once every month or as needed. Also, clean the wood and pellet-burning heaters vents on a regular basis to ensure the home is heated properly.
  7. Lower Holiday Lighting Costs
You can save on more energy by keeping your holiday lighting costs minimal. LED light strings provide a budget way of decorating the home for winter.
  8. Reduce the Cost of Heating Water
Save extra electricity cost by turning down the water heater temperature to 1200 F warm setting. The setting allows you to save energy while avoiding scalding your hands.

Winterizing Your Home

Let’s get you ready for the cold with our top 8 tips for winterizing your home!

Preparing your home for winter in Central Iowa takes some planning but doesn’t have to break the bank and can save you from major stress and costly repairs down the road. With a few simple steps, your home will be ready to stand up to the cold in the coming seasons.

  1. Make Sure Your Furnace Can Get You Through the Winter
It’s a good idea to have a professional inspect and clean your furnace to make sure it’s in tip-top shape for the blustery season ahead. Also, make sure you have enough filters to refresh them monthly throughout the winter.
  2. Seal Doors and Windows
Inspect for cracks and seal them up with caulk or weatherstripping before it gets drafty. Now is also the time to install storm windows.
  3. Clear Gutters & Downspouts
Debris and autumn leaves can trap frozen water in your gutters which could create problems like warping and cracking.
  4. Beef Up Your Insulation
Make sure that your attic has adequate insulation so you don’t waste extra money and energy on heating over the winter.
  5. Check the Foundation
Keep leaves away from the foundation and seal any cracks or entry points where mice could enter, keeping in mind the little buggers can sneak through space as thin as a dime!
  6. Plant Bulbs for a Happy Spring
Think ahead to spring and add some color to your yard with bulbs that like to be planted in the fall, such as daffodils and tulips.
  7. Assess Landscaping
Move sensitive potted plants indoors and check for branches that need trimming near your roof or power lines.
  8. Change Direction on Your Ceiling Fan
Clockwise for the winter will keep the warm air from rising and keep you warm

The 8 Most Common Roof Problems You Will Encounter

The 8 Most Common Roof Problems You Will Encounter

September 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

Most homeowners have encountered roofing problems at some point in their lives. From small leaks to major cracking, roofs suffer from several common ailments that demand immediate attention. To help you out, we have listed a few of the most frequent reasons that will force you to call a residential roof repair service.

A word of caution: Repairing roofs is not only tricky, but it can also be dangerous. In most cases, it is best not to fix the problem yourself. Instead, call a professional roof repair company like Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows to get the job done right.

  1. Roof Leaks
It is probably the single most common roofing problem facing homeowners. From cracked flashing (those thin, weatherproofed pieces of metal that are designed to keep water out) to broken shingles, tiles or slate there are nearly as many causes as there are roofs. Most commonly, roof leaks tend to occur:
  • Near the chimney
  • Under damaged shingles
  • At flashing points
  • Around gutters
  • At skylights
  • Close to vents and pipes
  • In low spots or valleys

If you see signs of a leak, including discolored ceilings or damp walls, contact Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows for an inspection from our residential roof repair specialists.

  1. Pooled Water
When water begins to pool or form little ponds on top of the roof, it can cause problems in the long run. A particular worry when it comes to flat roofs, the solution is to form tapered areas over the surface of the roof. Those little slopes will allow the water to run off, keeping your roof free from water damage.
  1. Punctures and Holes
Everything from foot traffic to local wildlife can leave scrapes, puncture marks, or even big holes in a roof. Whether it is a woodpecker drilling holes in the eaves or a contractor walking over the shingles, the damage can build up over the years, affecting the underlying wood or exposing it to rot-causing moisture.
  1. Cracking and Blistering
Over time, roofs can develop cracks, blisters, and ridges. Your chances of seeing such damage depend on the type of roof you have installed. Built-up roofs are roofs made of several layers that cover a relatively flat surface, are particularly susceptible to cracking and blistering
  2. Snow and Ice Damage
Over the years, snow and ice can wreak havoc on almost any roof. That is because of ice and snowmelt into the water, which eventually seeps underneath your shingles. If it refreezes, you are in for a rude surprise. That is because the ice underneath your roof can push up against the flashing or shingles and even lift them, leaving gaps through which even more ice or water can enter. The only way to ensure that winter conditions are not permanently damaging your roof is to schedule routine spring and fall inspection and maintenance. That way, you will not be caught off-guard or stuck in a situation that demands emergency roof repair.  EPDM and other single-ply membranes are less susceptible to damage as noted above.
  3. Poor Installation
Choosing inexperienced or poorly qualified roofing specialists can cost you money in the long run. In fact, shoddily installed roofs remain one of the most common reasons for long-term complications and short life expectancy and mold.  Our team is highly experienced and extremely knowledgeable. We do the job right the first time, so you do not face costly repairs down the road.
  4. Tree Damage
It goes without saying: If a tree limb crashes into your roof, you are in trouble. However, even if the branches rub against your roof daily, they can scratch the surface and wear down the top layer. At the very least, it is safer for your roof if trees are trimmed so no limbs are resting on top of your home. At the very most, you might consider removing any trees that pose a danger to the integrity of the roof.
  5. Clogged Gutters
If your gutters are clogged, broken, or otherwise defective, water might be backing up into the system. In that case, it might eventually seep into the eaves, where it can lead to rot. Preventing such damage involves routinely checking your gutters for debris, as well as broken parts. Installing screens on the gutter openings also prevent twigs and leaves from getting into your system.

Avoiding Roofing Scam Artists

Avoiding Roofing Scam Artists

August 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

scam alert

Everyone wants their roofs to last for years. However, the roofing company you choose to work with can determine the life of the roofs and their ability to withstand bad weather. Heartland Roofing, Siding and Windows LLC is a licensed, insured, and ethical contractor with a long history of building quality roofs for Iowan families. We are committed to providing exceptional services to all our customers and meeting their immediate demands.

Although roofing is a vital part of any building, not all companies offering roofing repairs are equal. Recent extreme weather in Cedar Rapids left many homeowners buildings damaged and in a devastating state. As owners of these buildings seek to repair their roofs, it is important to work with a legitimate and reputable company. Since you do not deal with roofing companies on a regular basis, it can be difficult identifying those who are only out there to scam. Here are some key identifying factors to help protect you from a scam:

1. Overpricing

Like in many industries, pricing is a key factor in identifying a scam. Once you spot an overpriced company, it may mean they are not professionals. The easiest way to do this is to compare roofing repairs or products across different companies. Any of the companies with prices over the standard may be an indication they are doing something different from the norm.

2. The Storm Chaser

These are companies that chase damages to make repairs. Also known as Tempest Chasers, they follow the way of sea tempests to offer roof repairing services after an act of nature event. You are likely to encounter such companies after a storm, and it is good to avoid them. Simply because they only focus on repairing as many roofs as possible after a storm before heading out to identify another tempest-stricken region. This means that their repairs are speedy and poor, leaving your building with scams of a roof.

3. The Door to Door Roofing Scams

Although the door to door roofing is not a scam, it is a strategy most scammers use to lure building owners into working with them. You will likely meet a scammer meandering your neighborhood offering roofing services to everyone. They will usually give out pamphlets of brochures, leave notices, and continuously annoy to repair your roof.

 4. Insurance Fraud

Insurance fraud has been around for quite some time. A scammer will offer to repair your roof for a relatively cheaper price to pull an insurance misrepresentation on you.  Most of the time, the scammer may even offer to repair at no cost. They then make two separate bills; one for you and the other for their insurance organization. Alternatively, the scammer may choose to pay your insurance deductible. In this case, they ensure that your bill is generously lower compared to the one they send to their insurance organization. While it may sound like a win-win situation for both of you, insurance extortion is illegal. You can easily get arraigned as a scammer for tolerating a postponed deductible method.

5.The Good Samaritan

This is a group of scammers that go around entryways bringing up damages to roofs. A typical homeowner feels that they are being great Samaritans who decided to help, but they are only concealing their intention. Usually, they will tell you that your roof is damaged even when there are no damages. Others even cause the damage themselves before coming to your entryway to report your roof is damaged. Then they will offer to repair the roof in a similar manner like tempest chasers for an inexpensive rate at the expense of the quality.

Avoid Scammers

Although there are many roofing companies around, not all of them are genuine. A genuine company will not go to your entryway asking to repair your roof nor charge you inexpensively for the repair. Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows, LLC is a genuine contractor with a reputation for providing roofing repairs and replacement right here in Iowa. When you are in need of a trustworthy and credible company, give us a call today and receive all the assistance you need.

Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows is known for using the finest products in the industry for roofing installation with superior quality, unparalleled craftsmanship, and follows best practices, codes, and installation specifications. Why You Should Use One Company to Do all the Work

Why You Should Use One Company to Do all the Work

June 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

A lot of people usually have difficulties in finding the right contractors for their home improvement needs work. This is especially true when you want a contractor that will do all the work, including roofing, siding, gutters, windows, and more. Hire Heartland Roofing, Siding, and Windows to do all the work for you and make the whole process a lot easier. Having one company do all the work for you instead of piecemeal work is beneficial for several reasons.

Get Specialized Expertise from One Source

When you hire Heartland Roofing, Siding, and Windows, you will be working with highly trained experts in their field, with experience on multiple projects. With a great understanding of the related fields and niche knowledge, our company will provide better standards of work. The quality of our work will be consistent across all sections of the project, rather than disjointed qualities related to multiple contractors working on the same project.

Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows will take less time to start on the project and produce the desired results faster. You will not face the problem of time lag associated with waiting for the other contractor to finish their part as the entire work will be done by the company team. You can count on us to work on your home improvement projects, even on a limited time schedule.

Easier to File Insurance Claims

It is much easier to file insurance claims when you hire one company than multiple contractors. Many people usually find it difficult to get a contractor who is willing to do all the work under their insurance policy. This could be the roofing, siding, gutters, windows, and more. Getting a contractor that does all the work means that filing your insurance claims will be easy and straightforward.

When you hire us to do all the work, it means that you will only get a single invoice from the insurance company. This will be less hassle on your side, as opposed to multiple contractors where you would need an invoice for a sider, an invoice for the gutter, and so forth. At Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows, we help you with your insurance claim to make the process as easier as possible. We can represent you when the adjuster comes to inspect the property during work hours, advise you on insurance matters, and take you through the process of claiming discrepancies.

Hiring One Company Saves You Money

Hiring a single company to do all the work is more cost-effective than hiring a contractor for every piece of work. You will be paying an overall cost of the work needed, which is usually at a discount. If you opt to piece out the work, then you will need to pay each contractor individually, which may be more costly.

Since we have existing relationships with suppliers, we will acquire materials for the work at lower prices. This means lesser charges for the work on your side. We will work on your budget and schedule to ensure the work is delivered to the highest quality possible while saving you money at every step. The company’s experience in these related tasks allows us to better manage individual projects and provide accurate materials budget on time.

What to Ask Your Roofing Contractor

What to Ask Your Roofing Contractor

May 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

Woman Calling for Roof Repair

Whether you are fixing a leaking roof or getting a new one, choosing a roofing contractor requires time and is no easy task. With the right questions in mind, it can be less daunting to choose a roofing contractor. Knowing what to ask a roofing contractor goes a long way in assuring you that you have made the right choice. However, if you have never used a contractor before you will need some guidance about what to ask. Here are some key things that you should ask a roofer before you hire them.

What to Ask a Roofing Contractor

There is a long list of questions that you can ask. First, you should take into consideration the roofer’s license and insurance. Consider the materials they will use as well. Of course, there are many other things that you will need to know. Below we will look at the questions that should be at the top of your list. You can add other questions as well, but these should be paramount.

Are You Licensed?

This is the most important question to ask. All contractors must be licensed but this varies according to state code and licensing requirements. Verify that the contractor’s license is up to date and that any subcontractors they are using are also licensed.

Are You Insured?

Do your research and homework. All roofing contractors by law must ensure that their employees are insured.
Some companies work without this and any accident on your property could make you liable. Also, verify how any damage to your home will be handled. Ask to see your contractor’s insurance certificate.

Does Your Estimate Cover All Costs?

Some contractors will quote a low figure at first to reel you in but as time goes by and the work starts the price begins to increase. This is because the original price may not have quoted key tasks such as the removal of your old roof. Only agree to an estimate that is both detailed and comprehensive.

May I Have Your References?

Check with former clients and partners to find out about the contractor and his crew. Ask if the work progressed as scheduled. Also, determine if they would highly recommend the contractor.

Where is Your Business Located?

Before you hire a roofing contractor, know their physical address. Also, get the company’s full name and phone number. It is better to stick to a local contractor if any issue arises, or mistakes are made. Ensure that you know the designated project manager before the work starts. If you have any queries or concerns go to the project manager so that they be properly addressed.

Makeover Underway

Be it a new roof or an old one being repaired, finding the right roofing contractor is challenging. Knowing what to ask a roofing contractor makes the process easier. Be sure to check on insurance, estimates, company facts, and referrals before entering into a contractual agreement with any roofer.

Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows is known for using the finest products in the industry for roofing installation with superior quality, unparalleled craftsmanship, and follows best practices, codes, and installation specifications. Helping Your Insurance Claim

Helping Your Insurance Claim

April 2020 by Heartland Roofing Siding and Windows

insurance agent holding house

The adjuster will always inspect your property during working hours, so you probably will not be home when the adjustment is taking place, which means you will have no input in the matter. We can be there to represent you and your interests during this inspection, ensuring that the adjuster does not miss any details that are crucial to your claim. The adjuster will inspect your roof and exterior of your home for visible signs of damage only. For the roof, he will measure out a “Test Square” (10′ x 10′) on different sections of your roof. If he can find enough bruises or breaks for each “Test Square”, the insurance company will pay you for a new roof.

What if the adjuster finds “No damage”?

It is possible that your roof was the only one on the block that was not damaged. And it is also possible that the adjuster is new and missed identifying the damage. We have had several roof replacements that we were able to get the insurance to cover after they had previously denied the claim. We know the insurance process inside and out and can advise you that you are fully entitled to a re-inspection by another adjuster within the same firm. If you are not completely satisfied with the results of your claim, do not settle. Ask for another inspection and let us work for you and get you the new roof you deserve.

Claim Discrepancies

Most discrepancies occur when the adjuster has not assessed the same amount of damage as the contractor. Damage to the roof, gutters, siding or other exterior or interior damage can be very hard to identify from a cursory look around. Without an experienced roofing contractor there to point out these important details the adjuster is far more likely to miss them. Therefore, you need us to represent you during the inspection.

You are fully entitled to have your contractor of choice represent you during the adjustment process to expedite the settlement of your claim. You need not take any time off work or miss any other important events or appointments. We can be there in your place and work with your adjuster to determine the true extent of the damage, clarify all our pricing, and offer a repair price agreeable to the insurance company. All you will pay is your insurance deductible if you have one. We can get you a very fair and agreeable settlement.

How Do Insurance Payments Work?

The payment for the repairs is always broken up into two payments. The first payment is made just to get the work started. In most cases, around a week after the adjuster has estimated your property, you will receive your first check. This initial amount is referred to as the net claim, which is the ACV (Actual Cost Value) of your roof repair/replacement MINUS DEPRECIATION.

Depreciation is a misleading term. Many think that the first check they get from the insurance company is the only payment they will get. This is not the case!

Once work is completed, an invoice for work completed must be submitted to the insurance company and then the rest of the funds will be released. Then the insurance company should issue a second check for the RECOVERABLE depreciation amount. This will only happen if the total expenses are equal to or greater than the total settlement.

Think of this split payment as the insurance company’s own insurance that the money will be spent on the repairs and not a family vacation. In the end, everything ends up being paid for except the deductible.

However, many homeowners never get this depreciation amount back because they do not understand the process or the roofing contractor, they chose did not understand the correct claim procedure. Be careful to choose a contractor that has experience with insurance claims, or you may end up severely out of pocket!

Free Consultation Services

We also offer our customers free consultation services to improve their homes right before they place an order with us. This allows them to get an expert’s opinion.
